Before you start
- Which one? Stand under each alarm and wait for the chirp
- Date on the back over 10 years? Replace the alarm
- Battery: 9 V carbon-zinc or alkaline. Not lithium
Steps
Turn the breaker off
THE ALARM'S CIRCUIT GREEN LIGHT GOES OFF
Twist toward OFF, take it down, squeeze + unplug
You should see: squeeze the side locks as you pull
Press the battery door, pull the 9 V out
You should see: press, release: the door pops open
Hold TEST/HUSH 15 s no power, no battery
at least 15 s — it may chirp, then goes silent
You should see: 15 s held: power it back
Plug in, twist on, breaker on
You should see: green light on
New battery in, press the door until it locks
You should see: one chirp, then silence
Hold TEST/HUSH 5 s: it should sound
stand an arm's length away
You should see: every linked alarm sounds too
How you know it worked
- One chirp at power-up, then silence
- Green light on
- TEST sounds every linked alarm
If it didn't work
- Chirp about 20 s after a red flash: sensor fault, replace the alarm. Door won't latch: battery reversed or missing. Chirp echoes alarm to alarm: loose white neutral. Still chirping: replace the alarm.
Full sequence
BREAKER OFF · TWIST OFF · UNPLUG · BATTERY OUT · HOLD TEST 15 s · PLUG IN · TWIST ON · BREAKER ON · BATTERY IN → 1 CHIRP · TEST 5 s
Notes from the card
- One press of TEST/HUSH quiets it about 13 h. Not a fix.
- Replace the alarm 10 years after the date code
- Kidde CO alarm chirping at 7 years = end of life
- Door or bracket locked? Tamper lock: see the manual
- GREEN ON = AC power
- RED FLASHING = sounding
